Ovivo Looks to Nature: 2 Tiny Organisms Making a Big Impact on Water Treatment
The Answer is in Nature.
Ovivo joins in this year’s World Water Day initiative by sharing some of the innovative, nature-based water treatment solutions we are using to prevent water pollution caused by wastewater.
Ovivo has helped pioneer the use of both algae and bacteria, two naturally occurring organisms that yield impressive results when applied to certain water treatment processes. Some of the many benefits we see that make these solutions sustainable include significant energy savings, reduced CO2 emissions and much smaller footprint than conventional wastewater techniques.
Big Solutions from Tiny Organisms
Phagotrophic algae are special groups of algae that can grow by ingesting smaller microorganisms such as bacteria and yeast. Phagotrophic algae play very important roles in ecosystem by limiting the population of bacteria in lakes and oceans. It has been reported that 40-95% of the bacteria-eating organisms in the surface layer of the temperate North Atlantic Ocean are consumed by phagotrophic algae in summer.
Anammox, an abbreviation for anaerobic ammonium oxidation, is a globally important microbial process of the nitrogen cycle that takes place in many natural environments. Anammox itself is a naturally growing microorganism that is responsible for 50% to 80% of nitrogen gas production in oceans, hence forming a key part of the nitrogen cycle in marine ecosystems.
A Natural Fit: Applying Naturally Powerful Processes to Wastewater Treatment
Ovivo’s BioAlgaNyxTM solution is a revolutionary sludge pre-treatment process that utilizes phagotrophic algae to accomplish sludge pre-treatment in a simple, low cost and energy efficient manner. This allows increased sludge hydrolysis rates in following digestion steps, leading to higher biogas production or alternately increased digestion capacity at the plant. Algae can also be harvested as a source of algal oil carbon for use in industry.
The AnammoPAQTM process is a cutting-edge technology that utilizes the power of Anammox bacteria to treat high nitrogen side streams in a compact, energy efficient reactor. The granular sludge basis of technology enables fast start up coupled with tremendous flexibility and ease of operation and maintenance. With over 15 years of experience treating 80% of the worlds deammonified nitrogen load, the system provides a robust and cost effective treatment for side stream treatment.
