- Stable and highly effective sludge mixing system
- Low power costs
- Low maintenance
- Proven, reliable technology
Anaerobic Digestion is highly dependent upon effective mixing. When tank contents are inadequately mixed, stratification occurs and tank volume is not properly utilized. But rotary mixers can be ineffective on thicker sludges and consume excessive power.
- Significant energy savings compared to conventional sludge mixing systems
- Ovivo’s LM™ mixer is a proven technology that achieves over 90% active tank volume
- Ragless design and low cost maintenance
- Capital and installation cost savings compared to rotary mixers
- Capable of mixing viscous fats, oils and greases (FOGs)
Wastewater treatment facilities require thorough and complete sludge mixing to ensure uniform temperature, solids distribution and microorganism contact to increase gas production and maximize the solids destruction. The LM mixer innovative technology allows achieving a unique and efficient mixing pattern throughout the tank while keeping energy requirements low.
The equipment is suitable for both new and existing tanks, at a fraction of the installation costs of conventional mixing technologies. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are used to custom design a system that will meet your mixing needs, by varying the frequency, stroke and disk size. Furthermore, the use of our hydro-disk prevents the build-up of rags and associated failures found in conventional systems.
Unlike other mixer systems, the LM mixer produces isotropic (uniform) mixing due to the combined effect of oscillating velocity coupled with pulsating pressure waves. This motion is created by the controlled up and down movement of a ring shaped hydro-disk (inside the tank) driven by an innovative cam-scotch-yoke operating system (above the tank). This concurrent action couples the oscillating pressure wave and velocity to enhance mass transfer and produce a uniform mixture of the tank’s contents.
PROVEN TECHNOLOGY THAT OFFERS SIGNIFICANT COST SAVINGS:
- The LM mixer does not rely on induced flow to create the necessary mixing.
- Multiple LiCl tests performed by various consultants, in several applications and conditions have demonstrated an active tank volume of 90% or greater.
- Installation of a single mixer can be completed in a day or less.
- No additional piping or core drilling is needed
- Suitable for both new or existing tanks
- Little to no changes are needed on existing structures
MAIN CONFIGURATION

Can a LM mixer be installed on existing digester covers?
Yes, the LM mixer can be installed on any cover that can withstand the additional loads of the mixer. Ovivo has over a hundred of installations, on either concrete covers, radial beam steel covers (either floating or fixed) and truss covers. If a cover is not available (i.e. anoxic basin), Ovivo can provide a bridge to support the proposed LM mixer system.
What is the material of construction for the mounting plate, hydro disk and lower shaft?
The mounting plate are typically manufactured out of carbon steel. The standard material for the hydro-disk and the lower shaft is 304L Stainless Steel.
Does Ovivo provide motor starter or VFDs? Would VFD be needed/recommended?
If desired, VFDs can be used, but this is a customer preference. We have some jobs that include a VFD but the majority do not. An advantage of VFDs is that they provide a soft start and further customization that allows for additional energy savings optimizxation and remote monitoring (amp draw readings can be sent directly to the SCADA system, etc.).
What should we consider before installing a LM mixer on existing tanks?
Since the optimum location of a LM mixer is at the center of the digester, it is necessary to verify the location of the gas collection piping, gas handling equipment and any other interior piping, for possible interference. Also, one should verify that the digester cover has sufficient structural strength to withstand the mixer’s loads.
How frequent will the LM mixer need to be removed from the digester cover for maintenance/repair?
The LM mixer drive head, shaft and hydro-disk do not need to be removed from their mounting location for regular maintenance. The shaft and hydro-disk are all stainless steel with no mechanical/maintenance parts below the mounting flange. With all the maintenance/wear items located in the drive head, above the cover and outside the tank, this is the only area which will need periodic maintenance.
