Pre-Treatment

Pre-Treatment Pre-Treatment

Ovivo defines pre-treatment as the stage of water and wastewater treatment prior to the main process elements. Typically, this will include the removal of impurities (screening, grit removal etc), pH adjustment, cooling and flow balancing (buffer capacity with possible aeration and mixing) in order to protect more sensitive downstream process units or processes from damage or limited efficiency, effectiveness or life.

Process

Pre-treatment processes can involve chemical dosing, sedimentation, cooling, screening and grit removal and media filtration. Typical issues that are handled with pre-treatment processes are for example:

  • Debris and bulk solids which could damage pumps and rotation machinery
  • Particulate matter which could foul fine media ion exchange resins or media
  • Oxidising agents which would attack membranes or resins
  • Organics, fats, oils and greases which could foul subsequent equipment
  • High temperatures which could compromise biological processes
  • High or low pH which can attack equipment and disturb biological processes
  • High flow peaks or lack of steady flow which can disturb processes or equipment
