Headworks
The term ‘headworks,’ (otherwise known as inlet works) in so far as it applies to wastewater treatment, refers to the removal (generally at the start of the wastewater treatment process) of screenable solids, grit, fats, oils and greases to ensure effective and reliable process performance within the plant. Historically the term derives from the traditional approach of using gravity as the driver through the plant and the location of these processes at the ‘head of the works’.
Further Details
Effective headworks (otherwise known as inlet works) screening is essential to the efficient operation of any municipal wastewater treatment plant. Materials such as gross solids, grit and sand can cause blockages as well as wear and damage to pipework, valves, pumps and treatment equipment.
Ovivo’s range of screens include: coarse, rotating and fixed bar screens, and fine screens. Typically these will be spiral type, band screens or bar arrangements.
Since most machinery breakdowns are the result of contaminants that should be removed at an earlier stage, grit removal and solids screening should be considered as important to the efficient operation of treatment plants as the wastewater treatment processes themselves. Good preliminary treatment (the screening and screening handling of gross solids and grit removal) ensures cost-effective plant operation and prevents the incidence of ragging and floatables.
Our Expertise
Ovivo headwork products are available for plants of all sizes. For smaller plants, Jones + Attwood CIS™ (Combined Inlet Systems) are specifically designed to handle all aspects of screening and grit handling in a single skid mounted unit. Larger units are also catered for by specialized headworks equipment.
Ovivo’s heritage in screening solutions is long and inclusive of Jones + Attwood (J+A), Copa and Brackett Green.
Screened solids and removed grit are washed to ensure that they contain the minimum of faecal solids to reduce odor and to ensure that they are suitable for transport and disposal, meeting all applicable legislation.
Effective grit removal and classification prevents accumulation in process units (such as anaerobic digesters) and prevents damage to sludge pumps and pipework. Ovivo is experienced in the provision of reliable and effective grit transport streams and the design of pipe runs, as well as meeting the needs of specific local conditions, including sand removal in warm climates and saline solutions in cold.
