Carrousel® Oxidation Ditch

Carrousel® systems have offered a reliable way to treat wastewater since the late 1970s. With over 700 installations, in the US alone, the solution has low energy usage and great reliability. Many innovations have been introduced over the last decades and Ovivo's systems easily meet the most stringent effluent criteria, including low Total Nitrogen and Phosphorus.
EliminatIR™ Gate
The EliminatIR™ gate allows for simple control of nitrate recycle in a Carrousel system that incorporates a pre-anoxic zone (the denitIR® Carrousel® process).
Excell® Aerator
The Excell®aerator is the most efficient surface aerator on the market today. It imparts velocity to the channels and delivers oxygen to the mixed liquor.
The Oculus™ System
The Oculus™ system reduces effluent ammonia, nitrate, total nitrogen and total phosphorus nutrients in Carrousel® systems using minimal amounts of energy.

Ovivo Carrousel Family

  • Total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) reduction to 3 mg/L and 0.3 mg/L, respectively

The Carrousel® system has offered a reliable way to treat wastewater since the late 1970s. With over 700 installations, many innovations have been introduced since that time

Six different flow sheets, including Bardenpho® systems, are currently available. Our most common system is the A2C™ system with free internal recycle for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) reduction to the lowest permit limits in the United States. Also available is the new AlternatIR™ system which reduces BOD, TN, and TP in a two-stage system, with no internal recycle pumping required. Many unique designs have also been delivered, including wrap-around clarifier construction and concentric ring plant or brush plant retrofits.

Key components of a Carrousel system are the high efficiency Excell® aerator, the nutrient-destroying EliminatIR™ gate , and the operator-friendly Oculus™ control system.

Excell® Aerator

  • Efficiently provides all of the aeration and mixing required for the Carrousel Basin.
  • 3.85 lb O2/HP-hr
  • Power turndown up to 90%
  • 1 man day of maintenance/year
  • You Stay Clean! – No maintenance below the deck

Oculus™ System

  • The process “All Seeing Eye”
  • User friendly interface
  • Efficient aeration control
  • Optimized nutrient removal
  • Save energy
  • Reduce chemical dependency
  • Remote access

EliminatIR™ Gate

  • Internal Recycle (IR) control
  • Automatically adjusts to maximize denitrification
  • IR rates between 0-12Q
  • Anaerobic cycling for phosphorus removal

The Excell aerator with the high efficiency surface impeller and the floor-scouring lower turbine efficiently provides aeration at full speed and at 80-90% turndown (drawing 10-20% nameplate power), while still maintaining sufficient mixing in the basin. The Excell aerator offers the best energy savings and dissolved oxygen control on the market.

The EliminatIR gate controls internal recycle from the aerobic zone to the anoxic zone while never drawing more than ½ a horsepower, saving significantly on power and maintenance compared to pumped systems. The EliminatIR gate comprises an electrically-actuated gate that regulates flow through the internal recycle channel.

With greater reliability of instrumentation today, the Oculus control system may be used to enhance operations to save energy and reduce nutrients. In its simplest form, the Oculus control system controls aeration with a DO probe and controls nitrate with an ORP or nitrate probe. Additional analyzers available are ammonia, mixed liquor suspended solids, pH, and phosphorus, which can be incorporated into the Excell aerator and EliminatIR gate control algorithms within the Oculus control system.

For the anoxic and anaerobic zones, both platform mounted mixers and submersible mixers are available.

Adding membrane digestion or the ProSet™ clarifier is a great way to minimize nutrient release from the sludge handling process.

With so many Carrousel systems out there, retrofits are a cinch to bring these older installations up to newer technology. Contact the Salt Lake City Ovivo® office or your local representative to find out more.
